This month, the charity Oxfam is running its #SecondHandSeptember campaign, aimed at highlighting the environmental costs of fast fashion and challenging shoppers to go the whole month without buying any new clothes.
Now, I rarely buy new clothes anyway – most things in my wardrobe come from charity shops – so this campaign is a bit wasted on me. But I thought it would be a good incentive to write about the joys of second-hand geeky shopping.
So for September, alongside my usual weekly anime and manga round-ups, I’ll be posting about my favourite places to shop for geek- and fandom-related stuff, my best second-hand finds, and the challenges of geek shopping on a budget. I’ll also be posting about the wonders of geek crafting and making your own alternatives to store-bought merch.
I’d love for you to join me in this by sharing with me your favourite second-hand buys, your favourite places to shop second-hand (both online and offline) and even your thoughts on the merchandise industry – do we as collectors ever stop to think about the environmental impact of all the stuff we buy? What’s the carbon footprint of a Funko Pop?
Go mad in the comments section or hit the ‘contact’ link to tell me all about your experiences of second-hand geekery!
Any second-hand September goodies I find will probably end up on Twitter, so be sure to follow me there as well.
